Anti-Imperial Metropolis: Interwar Paris and the Seeds of Third World Nationalism
Interwar Paris became a crossroads for anticolonial and anti-imperialist ideas that helped shape a post-imperial world order. This talk seeks to reconstruct the microhistory of these politics from the perspective of social and urban history, foregrounding the role of migration in an unequal world of rights. It argues that this cauldron shaped a particular way of thinking about the world that later proved uniquely influential.

Michael Goebel is Einstein Professor of Global History at Freie Universität Berlin. His research explores migration, cities, inequality, empire, and modern Latin America in comparative and global perspective. He is the author of Anti-Imperial Metropolis: Interwar Paris and the Seeds of Third World Nationalism and is currently completing a global history of modern cities while developing a comparative project on migration, property, and inequality.
